Hotel Droog in one of the most beautiful areas of Amsterdam

Last week I visited Hotel Droog in one of the best neighborhoods in Amsterdam. Behind the Stopera at the Staalstraat.
This time no vintage design, but design from designers of Droog.
The wonderful thing is that you are allowed to visit every room there is to be found in the authentic Amsterdam building and every time you are rewarded with a design surprise.

This already starts when entering Droog by walking through the shop with innovative and upcycled products most of it produced in small numbers. Each piece has been designed to enhance daily life and has its own story to tell. Walking further you enter a lush garden, a small oasis in Amsterdam. Upstairs is a cafe and tearoom. One of the first things that catches your eye is a modern version of Rembrandt’s famous painting “De Staalmeesters”.
In honour of the building’s history as home of the textile guild, Dutch artist Berend Strik was comissioned for a reinterpretation of the painting that once hung here. The art piece inmediately sets the tone, giving the place a great ambiance.
There are different rooms for different purposes: meetings, art exhibitions, private dinners, small events, you name it.
The interior design of each room beautifully illustrates “less is more” at its best and puts a smile on your face.

Moreover I have seen the best aquarium ever where the fish have their own dining room.
Speaking about rooms, the only room I couldn’t see live was the one and only bedroom so I borrowed that picture of the website of Droog.

A different perspective on design

Droog is a conceptual design company.
Co-founded in 1993 and directed by curator and author Renny Ramakers, Droog is an anti-statement; a no-nonsense, down to earth design mentality that opposes the high style and form-based world of design.

Droog has a highly conceptual approach, captured by the Dutch word “Droog”, meaning ‘dry’ in Dutch. By doing so, Droog has put Dutch Design on the world map.

We initiate projects and collaborations that are born from a sense of urgency. We execute them in an innovative way, often with a twist and they are always engaging.

We have been pioneering new perspectives for design and design-thinking since the early nineties.

From re-designing the smallest detail such as the humble screw, to re-dreaming entire cities; the Droog mentality unpacks many aspects of the human condition. Essentiaally, the spirit of Droog is human-centered and people-driven – aiming to develop new tools, scenarios, and business models for the future of design and society at large.

Droog is also place to visit. Situated in the heart of Amsterdam, you can eat, drink, shop and think the Droog way. We are daily open from 9am to 7pm.
After opening hours, join us for our series of events. Lectures, discussions, interviews and parties. Join up here.

“Hôtel Droog brings all of our activities under one roof—from curation to product design, exhibitions and lectures—and invites people to plug in as they choose.” says director of Droog Renny Ramakers.
